Mosaics date back a very long time, perhaps as long as architecture itself. Mosaic is the art of creating images with small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. The oldest mosaics found date back to the third millennium BCE from a Mesopotamian temple. These ancient mosaics were comprised of available materials such as shells, ivory, and small stones.

Modern mosaics are everywhere today, from subways, public restrooms, restaurants, and parks to any space in a residential setting. Modern mosaic tiles made of glass, stone, ceramic, pebbles, or metal cover floors, ceilings, walls, benches, tables, and more. For residential settings, mosaic tiles are particularly popular for kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, and bathroom floors. The mosaic tiles also serve a practical purpose in areas where floors can get wet (such as shower floors) because the more grout you have, the more traction to help with slip resistance. When it comes to where you might want to use mosaic tiles, the sky’s the limit!

One of our favorite mosaic categories is “mixed media mosaics.” These mosaics are composed of not just one type of material but two or more. Mixing the different tile materials allows interior designers to inject texture, dimension, and interest into a space. The juxtaposition of contrasting materials allows the mosaic tiles to fit with various design styles, from traditional to modern.

Crossville Studios offers hundreds of beautiful mosaic tile collections, and we could be here all day talking about them, but let’s look at just some of our fabulous mixed-media mosaic tile options. You can see all the mixed media categories by clicking on mixed media under “Style” on the product search page.

Swiss

Our Swiss mosaic tile collection is made of crackle beige glass, clear seashell resin decor, and limestone mosaic. This mixed media mosaic tile does not need to be sealed, making it ideal for a residential shower wall installation.

Metal Chic

Metal Chic mixed media mosaic is chic and sleek in decorative combinations of slate, glass, brushed aluminum, and polished stainless steel.

Icy

The Icy mixed media mosaic collection offers a variety of combos, including crackled glass, glossy glass, and a variety of marbles like Carrara and Emperador.

Cross

Our Cross mixed media mosaic is a mixture of 1” x 2’” white Volakas marble with diamond glass in a basketweave shape. Basketweave patterns are stunning on walls, but are practical for interior wet floors such as showers because the grout pattern provides extra traction.

Bliss

These “blissful” mosaics reveal the tranquil union of glass and stone. Our Bliss mixed media mosaic collection is available in various colors and shapes.

Diamond

Slate and glass tiles combine in the Diamond mixed-media mosaic to offer a tranquil coastal vibe.

Alice

The waterjet mixed mosaic tile line combines marble in an arabesque shape connected by a glittering, shining glass bridge. Our Alice mosaic is offered in eleven on-trend, glossy hues.
