Product & Trends Hex Appeal: Why We Love Hexagonal Shapes

While geometric shapes have long been a popular design trend, the six-sided honeycomb-like hexagon has become the most beloved. There’s just something about the hex shape that everybody loves. Why are we attracted to the hexagon? Let’s look at the reasons the hex has become the queen bee of all shapes and see some of our hex tile collections that can help fulfill design dreams with six-sided tile style.

The Hexagon Represents Orderliness and Precision

We are hardwired to organize chaos into order, which means the symmetry and balance of hex shapes satisfy those desires that we may not even be consciously aware of. Hexagonal shapes slot together perfectly with uniformity and precision, appealing to the eye and our innate desire for symmetry.

The Hexagon is Prolific in Nature

Look closely at nature, and you will find hexagons in over and over again.  We often hear the hex referred to as “Nature’s most perfect shape.”  Everyone knows the honeycomb contains hexagons, but snowflakes, soap bubble rafts, turtle shells, and more all contain hex shapes. Why are hexagons so prevalent in nature? It all has to do with efficiency. For example, the cells of a beehive honeycomb are hexagonal because the shape makes efficient use of space and building materials. Bees' honeycombs, made of interlocking hexagons, will hold the most amount of honey while using the least amount of wax. Similarly, hexagons are an excellent surfacing solution because they cover the area better than any other shape!

Hex Tiles Offer Modern Style and Retro Appeal

Back in the early 1900s, one-inch hex tiles were the go-to flooring choice for many bathrooms across America. Sometimes th hex tiles were be all white, or sometimes you could find surfaces tiled with complex patterns incorporating different colors. If you have a vintage home, you may want a look that is in keeping with the home’s age, and the classic one-inch hex tiles will accomplish that. But as with many classics, it’s the modern twists that tile designers put on the – such as larger formats, creative applications, and limitless colors and patterns that keep things fresh and current.
